The Baptist Health System offers up to five (5) scholarships to full-time undergraduate students with a minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA. Students must have a current FASFA on file in the UAB Financial Aid Office, must provide three letters of recommendation (one academic, one from a member of the Clergy and one personal or work related) and must complete the Baptist Health System Nursing Loan/Scholarship Program application. A contract must be signed by the scholarship recipient, which obligates him/her to work full-time for the Baptist Health System within 30 days of graduation. Barbara Ingalls Shook Foundation Scholarship
Established with funds received from the Barbara Ingalls Shook Foundation. Criteria: admission to or current enrollment in a clinical major degree, cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0, United States citizen, and legal resident of Alabama. Must be enrolled full-time each term the scholarship is awarded. The School of Nursing Office of Student Affairs announces application deadline and procedures.
Basic Midwifery Scholarships
To provide financial assistance for midwifery education to student members of the American College of Nurse-Midwives.

To provide financial assistance to students in Delaware, Maryland, and Virginia who are interested in preparing for a career in health care.

To recognize and reward health care professionals who have made outstanding contributions to the development or improvement of medical instrumentation.

To provide funding to postdoctorates in the behavioral sciences who wish to pursue research training in an area related to epilepsy.

To provide funding to undergraduate and graduate students interested in working on a summer study project in a field relevant to epilepsy research or clinical care.

Bernice L. Vance Scholarship
Eligible applicants must: be native West Virginians; accept employment as a nurse in West Virginia for one year after passing boards; be enrolled in an accredited nursing program (full- or part-time); before renewal, provide proof that they remain in nursing programs and are making satisfactory progress; and include two character references. Bernice Pickens Parsons Fund Scholarships
To provide financial assistance to residents of West Virginia who are pursuing education or training in designated fields.

1. Applicant must be enrolled in good-standing as an undergraduate or graduate student attending a 2- or 4-year accredited college or university in the U.S. or its territories as of Fall 2001. Applicant must be a legal resident of the U.S. Applicant cannot be an employee of Best Web Buys or a friend or relative of Best Web Buys employees. To provide financial assistance to students from selected counties in Missouri, Iowa, Kansas, and Nebraska who are working on a degree in the health field.

Award for children of employees of Biomet Inc. and its subsidiaries, pursuing undergraduate studies. Submit application, transcript, test scores, and references. Write for more information. Renewable award of $2000.

Scholarships for members of the National Black Nurses' Association who are enrolled at an accredited school of nursing. Requires transcript, letter of recommendation from local chapter and school of nursing, and self-addressed stamped envelope with $.78 postage. Must show evidence of community service.

Bobby K. Young Scholar Award
To provide funding to nurses interested in conducting research on cancer pain management or patient outcomes.
Number Awarded: 1 each year.
Duration: 1 year.

Must currently be enrolled in a state accredited school of nursing or pre-nursing major. Must be a student in good standing with the school. Must have a GPA of at least 2.5. Include an unofficial copy of applicant's college transcript. Must be a nontraditional student and must complete the portion of the application to qualify his/her nontraditional status. Non-traditional students are defined as being minorities, single parents and/or men. Must describe how scholarship will benefit the applicant. Must submit two letters of recommendation reflecting the applicant's academic and personal achievements, level of maturity, motivation, self confidence, and leadership, as well as potential for future success. One letter must be from the applicant's professor or dean of nursing; the other from a supervisor, advisor, clergyman or mentor. Must write a 200-300 word essay (typed and double spaced) on the topic "How Nurses Affect Their Communities in a Positive Way."

Deadline: January of each year. Brenda Ulmer/Valleylab Scholarship
Established in 2000 by Valleylab in honor of AORN President Brenda Ulmer to support a registered nurse working in the operating room who is pursuing a BSN or an RN to MSN degree. RN Applicants shall be a member of AORN in good standing. Membership must be maintained continuously for 12 months prior to the June 30th application deadline and throughout the funding period. Membership is considered lapsed if full dues are not received at AORN Headquarters by the last day of the renewal month. A cumulative 3.0 GPA average is required and must be maintained for RN members. Student nurse applicants must submit proof of acceptance or enrollment in a NLNAC or CCNE program at an accredited institution. RN member nurses must be enrolled in an appropriate accredited institution for higher education. Applicant is responsible for submitting all materials, including application form, transcripts, resume or CV, personal statement and three letters of endorsement.

A contract must be signed by the scholarship recipient, which obligates him/her to work full-time at Brookwood Medical Center immediately after graduation for one or two years depending on the length of time the recipient was supported by Brookwood Medical Center. Deadline: March of each year. Business and Professional Women's Foundation
The Foundation offers the New York Life Foundation Scholarship Program for Women in the Health Professions to women who are seeking education necessary for advancement within a career. Scholarships range from $250 to $1000 for tuition, fees, and school-related expenses such as child care and transportation. Applicants must be: female, 25 years of age or older, a U.S. citizen, officially accepted into an accredited program of study, be graduating within 1 to 2 years, and demonstrate critical need for financial assistance. Applications are available between November 1 and April 1.
